Update, 30 September 2026 (evening): The FBR has since officially extended the deadline to 15 October 2026 under Section 214A. See the confirmed notification: FBR Tax Return Deadline Extended Till October 15, 2026: Official Notification.
Today, 30 September 2026, is the last date to file Tax Year 2026 income tax returns in Pakistan. As the deadline nears, businesses and taxpayers are watching closely for any word of a grace period.
The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has held firm so far. Major bodies including the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FPCCI) and the Pakistan Tax Bar Association (PTBA) have written to the FBR Chairman and, in some cases, directly to the Prime Minister, asking for more time to protect genuine taxpayers from penalties. See our earlier coverage: PTBA Urges FBR to Extend the Deadline to December 2026.
A Fake Extension Notice Is Circulating: Do Not Trust It
Alongside the genuine extension requests, a fabricated notification has been circulating on social media today, claiming the deadline had been extended to 15 October 2026. The FBR has publicly dismissed it as fake, stating that no such circular has been issued. Do not rely on screenshots or forwarded messages claiming an extension. The only reliable source is an official notification on fbr.gov.pk, which we will link here the moment one is issued.
Why the IRIS Portal Is Under Strain
The main argument for an extension is the state of the FBR’s own systems. With hundreds of thousands of taxpayers trying to file at once, the IRIS portal has been under heavy load. Taxpayers across major cities are reporting login timeouts, pages freezing, and failures in receiving OTP codes or generating system calculations. Tax advisers argue it is unfair to penalise taxpayers when the state’s own infrastructure cannot handle the volume.
What Is the Current Position?
Update: Later on 30 September 2026, the FBR officially extended the deadline to 15 October 2026 under Section 214A, the same date and section named in the fake notice earlier that day. What was fake in the morning became official by night. See the confirmed notification and what it means.
What You Should Do in the Final Hours
Do not treat an extension as guaranteed. Under the FBR’s own recent announcement, the late filer category ends on 1 October 2026, and missing today’s deadline means an immediate Active Taxpayer List (ATL) surcharge of up to Rs 25,000 for individuals, on top of the ordinary late-filing penalty. See FBR Discontinues the Late Filer Category and FBR Tax Return Last Date 2026: Deadline, Extension & Penalty.
- If the portal is accessible, log in now and save each section as a draft as you go, rather than filling in the whole return in one sitting.
- Do not try to complete large wealth statement entries in one go. Save progress section by section so a timeout does not cost you everything.
- Have your documents ready in advance. See documents required for income tax filing.
- After filing, confirm you are on the list: ATL Status Check.
- If you genuinely cannot file today, you can apply to your Commissioner under Section 119 on IRIS for a personal extension before midnight.
