What your result means

Active

The number appears on the latest ATL that FBR published. For a business, check that the name on the card matches the person or company you expect.

Not on ATL

The number was not found on the latest list. The return may not be filed for the year, or was filed after the list was published. It does not prove someone never filed.

Wrong list?

Income Tax and Sales Tax are separate lists. A business can be active for sales tax and absent from the Income Tax list, and the other way round.

Typed wrongly?

A single wrong digit gives “Not on ATL”. Re-enter the number carefully before you draw any conclusion.

For anything important, confirm on FBR’s own portal. This page is our own search tool and is not affiliated with FBR.

Which number do I enter, a CNIC or an NTN?

Individuals

Salaried people, freelancers, pensioners and sole earners use their 13-digit CNIC. Dashes are fine. For an individual, the CNIC serves as the NTN.

Companies and businesses

Companies, associations of persons and registered businesses have their own NTN. It is separate from the owner’s CNIC, and the two can have different statuses.

Not registered?

If you have no NTN yet, you must register before you can file a return or appear on the list. See our NTN registration services.

Why filer status matters

Banks, employers and other withholding agents use the ATL to decide which withholding tax rate to apply. Being off the list can mean higher tax deducted, and restrictions on some transactions.

Banking

Withholding tax on bank profit, cash withdrawals and some transfers can differ for filers and non-filers.

Property and vehicles

Purchases, sales and registrations often carry different advance tax depending on filer status.

Business payments

Companies deduct tax at source from suppliers and contractors at rates that depend on their status.

Rates change with every Finance Act, so we do not list figures here. Use our withholding tax calculator or read Understanding withholding tax in Pakistan.

I filed my return but I am still not on the list

Work through these in order. One of them is usually the answer.

  1. The list was published before you filedFBR publishes its list periodically. A return filed after the latest list will not appear until the next one.
  2. The return was saved but not submittedA draft in IRIS does not count as filed. Open the return and confirm it shows a submission acknowledgement with a date and reference number.
  3. You filed for a different tax yearThe latest list reflects returns for a specific year. Filing a later year early does not change the list that is live today.
  4. You checked the wrong list or numberTry the other list (Income Tax or Sales Tax), and re-check the CNIC or NTN digit by digit.
  5. Something is wrong with the profileA name mismatch or an inactive registration can keep a taxpayer off the list. We can review your FBR profile for you.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Active Taxpayer List (ATL)?

It is a list published by the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) of the persons and businesses that are registered and have filed their returns. Banks, employers and other withholding agents use it to decide which rate to apply.

How do I check my filer status in Pakistan?

Choose Income Tax, enter your 13-digit CNIC (or the NTN if you are a company or business), and press Verify Now. If the number is on the latest list, the card shows Active.

How do I check an NTN by CNIC?

Enter the 13-digit CNIC in the box. Dashes are fine. For an individual, the CNIC is used as the NTN, so the same number checks both.

Which number should I enter, a CNIC or an NTN?

Individuals use their 13-digit CNIC. Companies, associations of persons and registered businesses use their NTN. If you run a business, the business and the owner can have different statuses, so check each number separately.

Is this the official FBR list?

The data comes from the files FBR publishes, but this is our own search tool, not an FBR page. For an official record, confirm on FBR’s own portal.

How often is the list updated?

Our copy is refreshed every day, and the date of the last update is shown under the search box. FBR updates its published list less often, so a new filing can take time to appear.

Why am I active for Sales Tax but not Income Tax (or the other way round)?

Income Tax and Sales Tax are separate registrations with separate lists. Being active on one does not make you active on the other.

What does Not on ATL mean?

The number was not found on the latest list. The return may not have been filed for the year, may have been filed after the list was published, or the number may have been typed wrongly.

I filed my return but I still show Not on ATL. Why?

The most common reasons are that the list was published before you filed, the return was saved but not submitted, you filed for a different tax year, or you checked the wrong list or number. See the checklist on this page, then wait for the next published list.

Can I check by SMS?

Yes. Send ATL, a space, then the registration number to 9966.

Can I check many CNICs or NTNs at once?

Yes. Our Bulk ATL Check takes an Excel, CSV or text file with one number per row and gives the list back as an Excel file with each status filled in.

Do you save the numbers I search?

No. A search reads the stored list and shows the result. The number you type is not saved. The site only keeps a short-lived request counter for each visitor, to stop automated abuse.

Is the check free? Do I need to log in?

The check is free. You do not need an account, an FBR IRIS login, or any sign-up.

Can I check a supplier or client?

Yes. Enter their CNIC or NTN. Businesses often check suppliers before payments, because filer status can change the withholding tax that applies.

How do I get on the Active Taxpayer List?

Register for an NTN if you do not have one, file your income tax return and make sure it is submitted, then wait for FBR to publish the next list. We can help with each step.
