How to Check FBR Filer Status Online by CNIC

The fastest way to check whether you’re an active tax filer in Pakistan is through FBR’s own Active Taxpayer List (ATL) verification tool on the IRIS portal — no login required. Being on the ATL matters practically: filers pay lower withholding tax on bank transactions, vehicle registration, and property transfers than non-filers, and staying off it after you’ve filed usually just means the list hasn’t refreshed yet (it updates weekly, typically on Sundays).

Check Your Filer Status Online (No Login Needed)

  1. Go to iris.fbr.gov.pk and click Verifications in the top menu, or scroll to the Online Verifications panel on the login page.
  2. Select Active Taxpayer List (Income Tax) from the left-hand list.
  3. Choose your Parameter Type from the dropdown — NTN, CNIC, Passport No., Reg/Inc. No., or Registration No.
  4. Enter your CNIC (13 digits, no dashes) or NTN in the Registration No. field.
  5. Enter the CAPTCHA shown and click VERIFY.

The result tells you directly whether you’re on the current Active Taxpayer List, and for which tax year. If you’ve filed your return but the system still shows you as inactive, don’t panic — the ATL is rebuilt weekly, so a return filed a few days ago may not have synced yet.

Other Ways to Check

Via SMS

Type your CNIC (without dashes) and send it to 9966. FBR replies with your ATL status by SMS — useful if you don’t have internet access at the moment but do have signal.

Via the Tax Asaan App

FBR’s Tax Asaan mobile app (available on the Play Store and App Store) includes an “Online Verification” section where the same ATL lookup can be done from your phone, alongside NTN registration and e-payment features.

Why This Actually Matters

Non-filers pay noticeably higher withholding tax rates under the Tenth Schedule — on cash withdrawals over the threshold, vehicle registration/transfer, property purchase, and profit on debt, among others. For someone buying a car or a plot, the filer/non-filer gap in withholding tax alone can run into hundreds of thousands of rupees, which is why we tell clients to confirm ATL status before, not after, a major transaction. If your status looks wrong or you’re not sure why you’ve dropped off the list, our team can check it against your actual filing record — see our Income Tax Return Filing Services or get in touch via our contact page.

Non-Filer Restrictions Are Getting Stricter

It’s worth understanding that the filer/non-filer gap isn’t just about paying a higher withholding rate anymore. Recent changes to the framework around Section 114C introduce direct activity restrictions for people who stay off the ATL — beyond just taxing non-filers more, certain transactions can be restricted outright for persons who aren’t active taxpayers. This is a meaningful shift from the older system where being a non-filer was purely a “pay more” problem rather than a “can’t do this at all” problem.

What If My Name Was on the List Before But Isn’t Now?

Two common reasons: (1) the ATL for a tax year expires and rolls over to the next year’s list around the return-filing deadline — if you haven’t filed the current year’s return yet, you may temporarily drop off even though you were compliant last year, or (2) your return was filed but flagged for some discrepancy (mismatched bank information, an incomplete wealth statement) that’s holding up your inclusion. If SMS/portal checks both show you as inactive and you’re confident you filed correctly, the usual next step is checking your IRIS “Inbox” for any notice FBR may have issued, rather than re-submitting the same return again.

Checking Someone Else’s Filer Status (For Business Purposes)

The same ATL verification tool works for checking any CNIC or NTN, not just your own — commonly used before finalizing a large property or vehicle transaction, since the withholding rate applied depends on the other party’s filer status, not just yours. A buyer confirming a seller’s filer status (or vice versa) before a transaction is a normal, legitimate use of this public tool.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often does the ATL update?
FBR rebuilds the Active Taxpayer List on a weekly basis, typically over the weekend — so a return filed on a Monday may not reflect in your ATL status until the following weekend’s update.

I filed my return years ago and never checked ATL status since — could I have silently dropped off?
Yes. Filer status isn’t permanent; it’s tied to filing your return for the relevant tax year and any subsequent year, so a gap in filing (even one year) will eventually drop you from the current ATL regardless of past history.

Is there a fee to check ATL status?
No — the online verification tool, SMS check, and Tax Asaan app lookup are all free, no login required for the basic ATL check.
