Check your FBR Active Taxpayer List ATL status before the October 15 2026 deadline

Published: 6 October 2026 | By Umair A R Mughal

The FBR has extended the Tax Year 2026 income tax return deadline to 15 October 2026. For most taxpayers, the practical question is simple: will my name be on the Active Taxpayer List (ATL) once I file, and what happens if it is not?

This guide explains what the ATL is, how to check it, how quickly it updates, and what it costs to get back on if you miss the extended date. For the extension itself, see our explainer on Circular No. 03 and the official notification.

What Is the Active Taxpayer List?

The ATL is the FBR’s published list of taxpayers who have filed their income tax return for the latest tax year. Banks, vehicle registration offices, property registrars and withholding agents use it to decide which tax rate to charge you. If you are on the list, you pay the lower filer rates. If you are not, you pay higher withholding rates on many everyday transactions.

Where being off the ATL costs you

  • Cash withdrawals and other banking transactions
  • Purchase and registration of vehicles
  • Property purchases and transfers
  • Payments received by businesses, where the payer must deduct tax at the higher non-filer rate

How to Check Your ATL Status

  1. Open the ATL page on the FBR website and search with your CNIC or NTN.
  2. Check that the status shows as Active for the current list.
  3. If you are not listed after filing, confirm in IRIS that your return shows as submitted, then compare the filing date with the due date.

For a step-by-step walkthrough, see our ATL status check guide.

How Quickly Does the ATL Update?

Since the FBR’s 2024 changes (S.R.O. 1638(I)/2024), the ATL is updated daily instead of weekly. A taxpayer who files by the due date, including an extended due date notified by the FBR, qualifies for inclusion. We have not seen an official guarantee of a fixed number of hours, so allow a short time for the list to refresh after you submit, and keep your IRIS acknowledgement as proof of filing in the meantime.

What Changes After 15 October

If you file by 15 October, you remain a filer. If you miss it, the late filer category no longer applies, so you are treated as a non-filer until you are restored to the ATL. Details are in our post on the end of the late filer category.

Restoring your name has been reported to cost a surcharge on top of the usual late-filing penalty under Section 182:

Taxpayer Earlier Now (as reported)
Salaried and business individuals Rs 1,000 Rs 25,000
Associations of Persons (AOPs) Rs 10,000 Rs 50,000
Companies Rs 20,000 Rs 100,000

These are the amounts reported at the time of the FBR’s announcement. Check the current text on fbr.gov.pk before relying on them. See also penalty for late income tax return filing.

How to Make Sure You Land on the ATL

  1. Reconcile your wealth statement. It should match your bank balances, card spending and property purchases. With the National Faceless Center now handling audits (see SRO 1665(I)/2026), mismatches are flagged by the system.
  2. Use Tax Year 2026 for both your return and any payment. A payment under the wrong year is slow to correct.
  3. Pay first, then file. Generate your PSID, pay through online banking or a bank branch, and link the CPR to your IRIS draft before submitting.
  4. Save your draft often. IRIS slows down near deadlines, and a timeout can lose your entries.
  5. Keep your documents ready. See documents required for an income tax return.
  6. Check the ATL after filing and keep your submission acknowledgement.
