The October 15 deadline is behind us. For many people, so is the panic.
IRIS was slow. The new wealth statement asked for IBANs and property details. Many people filed late at night, half-tired to beat the clock.
Now the doubts are setting in. Did I include my second bank account? Is that plot showing the right value? Did I forget the profit on my savings?
If that seems familiar don’t worry. These types of errors are widespread yet most can be addressed. The trick is to fix them before FBR finds out.
This article covers the FBR Tax Return Revision Rules 2026, the risks of leaving errors in place, and exactly how to revise the income tax return Pakistan filers submitted in a hurry.
The most common mistakes we’re seeing this year
In our office, these are the same errors that come up after this deadline:
- A bank account left out of the wealth statement, or listed without its IBAN
- Profit on savings accounts or National Savings certificates not declared
- A property bought jointly with a family member missing from the wealth statement
- Rental or freelance income left out
- Cash in hand entered as a round guess, so the wealth statement doesn’t reconcile
None of these is fraud. But to FBR’s automated systems they are gaps.
FBR Tax Return Revision Rules 2026 and the 60-Day Window
Amendments are subject to Section 114(6) of the Income Tax Ordinance, 2001.
No permission necessary within 60 days
If you amend your return within 60 days of the filing of your original return, you will not need the Commissioner’s approval
The 60 days are counted from the date you submitted, not the due date. If you filed on October 14, you have until roughly mid-December.
Approval is required after that
Outside that window, you apply on IRIS for the Commissioner’s approval. You will need to provide written reasons
There are protections built in.
If the Commissioner has not made a decision within 60 days of your application, you will be declared approved.
If your revision increases your income or reduces your loss, approval is treated as given.
Fora bona fide mistake, the law directs the Commissioner to approve.
What every revision must include
- Written, signed reasons for the revision
- Revised accounts, for businesses, where relevant
- An income figure that is not lower than any income already fixed by an FBR order
Revising early saves money
Under Section 114(6A) if you revise before FBR selects you for audit or issues a notice, and pay any extra tax with default surcharge, no penalty applies
Wait until an audit spots the problem, and 25% of the penalty is added. Wait for a show-cause notice under Section 122(9), and it rises to 50%.
The Risk of Leaving Errors in Place
This year, FBR is far better at spotting mistakes than it used to be.
Its National Faceless Centre now selects audit cases by computer, using data from banks, property registrars and excise offices. A missing bank account or plot isn’t likely to stay hidden for long.
Section 111 and unexplained income
Under Section 111, if you have assets, deposits or spending that your declared income can’t explain, FBR can treat the unexplained amount as your income and tax it
That is the most common route from a small omission to a large tax bill.
Section 122(5A) amendments
Under Section 122(5A), the Commissioner can amend an assessment that is wrong in a way that harms revenue. Once a mismatch is spotted this is often how FBR reopens a return that has already been accepted.
Getting an FBR Section 111 notice reply right
You’ve already received a notice, the reply is critical.
- Answer within the deadline on the notice. Don’t ignore it.
- Explain the source of every asset or deposit in question, such as savings, a gift, a loan, an inheritance or the sale of another asset.
- Attach evidence: bank statements, gift deeds, sale deeds, loan agreements.
- Ensure your explanation is consistent with your wealth statement for the same years.
A well-documented FBR Section 111 notice reply can close a case. A vague one leads to an addition to income.
How to Fix It on IRIS
Here is the general process for a revised return.
If you’re within 60 days
- Log in to IRIS.
- Go to Declaration, then Returns/Statements (Revised).
- Select the tax year and open the normal return. Your original figures will load.
- Correct the income section, tax credits and deductions.
- Enter your reasons for the revision.
- Submit and download the acknowledgement.
If you’re past 60 days
- Go to Declaration, then Revision Applications.
- Select the return for the tax year and write your reasons.
- Submit and wait for the Commissioner’s order in your IRIS inbox, or for 60 days to pass.
- Then file the revised return as above.
Menu names may look slightly different in newer versions of IRIS.
FBR wealth statement amendment
Most errors this year are in the wealth statement so treat the FBR wealth statement amendment as part of the same exercise.
- Add any missing bank accounts with IBANs and balances as at June 30, 2026
- Add missing properties and vehicles at their correct cost. Remove anything you sold.
- Make sure the reconciliation works. The increase in your net assets should be explained by income, gifts, loans or sale proceeds.
- Keep the wealth statement and income figures consistent. If you fix one and not the other, you just end up with a new mismatch.
