“Business registration” means something different depending on your structure — this is a documents-and-process reference, not another general “how to start” guide. See our full starting-a-business guide for the broader decision-making walkthrough.
What “Registration” Actually Requires, by Structure
Sole Proprietorship
- Valid CNIC
- Active mobile number and personal email for IRIS registration
- No SECP registration — NTN registration alone is your “business registration”
Partnership (AOP)
- Partnership deed (specifying profit-sharing ratio, capital contribution, roles)
- CNICs of all partners
- Registration with the provincial Registrar of Firms
- Separate NTN registration for the AOP itself
Company (SMC or Private Limited)
- Reserved company name (via SECP e-Services)
- Memorandum and Articles of Association
- Director/shareholder CNICs and registered office address
- SECP incorporation fee, scaled to authorized capital
Document Checklist Before You Start
- Original CNICs for all owners/directors (copies alone often aren’t accepted for verification)
- Proof of registered/business address (utility bill or rental agreement)
- For companies: a name reservation confirmation before drafting incorporation documents
- Bank account opening documents ready once registration completes, not after
Sector-Specific Registrations to Check
Depending on your business activity, registration may not stop at NTN/SECP — food businesses, pharmaceuticals, import/export, and financial services each carry additional regulatory registration requirements beyond the basic business registration covered here.
Common Registration Mistakes
- Registering the wrong taxpayer category in IRIS, requiring correction later.
- Skipping name-availability checks before drafting SECP incorporation documents, causing rejected reservations.
- Declaring a business address for a purely salaried individual, triggering unnecessary business-income filing obligations.
Verify requirements directly on SECP’s official website and register your NTN through FBR’s IRIS portal.
