Trademark Classes in Pakistan: Nice Classification Explained (2026 Guide)

SECP official website - What We Do page outlining regulatory mandate

Every trademark application in Pakistan must specify a class – a category of goods or services the mark will be used for. IPO-Pakistan uses the international Nice Classification system, which divides all goods and services into 45 classes: 34 for goods and 11 for services. Getting the class right matters because your trademark is only protected within the class(es) you register it in, and each class requires a separate application and fee.

How to Pick the Right Class

Choose the class based on what your brand actually sells, not your company’s general industry. A software company selling a mobile app registers under Class 9 (downloadable software) or Class 42 (software design/SaaS), not a generic “technology” class. A restaurant registers under Class 43, while packaged food it sells retail may need Class 29 or 30 separately.

If your brand covers multiple unrelated categories – say, both clothing (Class 25) and a retail service (Class 35) – you’ll need a separate application and separate fee for each class. IPO-Pakistan’s official classification pages list detailed sub-items under each class if you need to check exactly what’s covered.

FAQ

Can one trademark application cover multiple classes?

No – Pakistan requires a separate Form TM-1 application, and a separate fee, for each class. There’s no combined multi-class filing option.

What happens if I register in the wrong class?

Your trademark protection only extends to the class you registered in. If a competitor uses a similar mark in a different class than yours, your registration typically won’t stop them – so getting the class right at filing time matters more than most applicants realize.

Where can I see the full list of items under each class?

IPO-Pakistan’s Classification Details page publishes the complete Nice Classification document with detailed sub-items, alphabetical lists, and explanatory notes for every class.

Do I need a different class if I expand into a new product line later?

Yes – if the new product falls under a class your existing registration doesn’t cover, you’ll need a new application for that class specifically.
