If you don’t have internet access handy but need to check whether you’re on FBR‘s Active Taxpayer List, SMS is the fastest fallback — no app, no login, works on any phone with a SIM signal.
How to Check Filer Status via SMS
- Open your messaging app
- Type your 13-digit CNIC number, without dashes
- Send it to 9966
- FBR replies with your current Active Taxpayer List status
What the Reply Actually Tells You
The SMS reply confirms whether you’re currently on the ATL, and for the relevant tax year. If it shows you as inactive despite having filed recently, remember the ATL is rebuilt periodically (typically weekly) — a very recent filing may not have synced into the list yet.
Other Ways to Check
If SMS isn’t working or you want more detail than a status check, the full online ATL verification via IRIS gives you the same information plus the ability to check by NTN or Registration Number, not just CNIC.
If your status looks wrong and you’ve genuinely filed, it’s worth having someone check your actual filing record against the ATL rather than assuming it’s a sync delay indefinitely. Get in touch via our contact page.
FAQs
Is the SMS service free?
Standard SMS charges from your mobile carrier apply, but FBR doesn’t charge separately for the service itself.
Can I check someone else’s filer status via SMS using their CNIC?
Technically the SMS system doesn’t verify who’s sending the request, but this information should only be checked for your own CNIC or with proper authorization — filer status is treated as sensitive information tied to an individual’s tax compliance.
Why does the SMS say my CNIC format is invalid?
The most common cause is including dashes or spaces — enter all 13 digits with no separators.
