Every FBR income tax return filing question starts the same way: “what documents do I actually need?” Here’s the real list, organized by taxpayer type, based on what we ask clients for before we start a filing.
For Salaried Individuals
- CNIC and NTN (if you don’t have an NTN yet, registration happens as part of the process)
- Salary certificate or salary slips for the tax year, showing gross salary and tax already withheld under Section 149
- Bank statements for the tax year (helps reconcile any additional income or large transactions)
- Details of any other income — rental income, profit on debt/dividends, freelance work on the side
- Proof of any tax credits or deductions you’re claiming (e.g., Zakat paid, approved donations, pension contributions)
For Business Owners and Freelancers (AOP/Individual)
- All of the above, plus
- Business bank account statements for the full tax year
- Sales/revenue records and expense records (invoices, receipts) sufficient to calculate net income
- Withholding tax certificates from clients or platforms who deducted tax on payments to you
- Details of business assets and liabilities for your wealth statement
For Companies
- Audited financial statements for the tax year
- Company NTN and registration documents (SECP incorporation certificate)
- Board resolution or authorization for whoever is filing on the company’s behalf
- Withholding tax challans/CPRs for advance tax paid during the year
Wealth Statement Documents (All Individuals)
Alongside your income tax return, individuals must file a wealth statement — this needs documentation of all assets (property, vehicles, bank balances, investments) and liabilities (loans, mortgages) as of the tax year-end. Property purchase/sale documents, vehicle registration books, and investment account statements all feed into this.
Why Gathering This Upfront Saves You Time
The single biggest delay we see in filing isn’t the tax calculation itself — it’s clients scrambling to find a withholding certificate or bank statement mid-filing, past the deadline pressure point. Keep a running folder through the year (physical or digital) rather than reconstructing everything in September.

FAQs
Do I need physical copies of all these documents, or are digital/scanned copies fine?
Digital copies (clear scans or photos) are generally fine for filing purposes — IRIS doesn’t require physical document upload for most standard filings, though you should retain originals in case of an audit or notice later.
What if I don’t have a salary certificate from my employer?
Salary slips for the year, or a bank statement showing consistent salary credits, can work as a substitute — but a proper salary certificate is the cleanest evidence and worth requesting from HR if you don’t already have one.
Do I need to submit these documents to FBR, or just have them ready?
For most individual filings, you don’t upload every document to IRIS — you use them to accurately fill in the return and wealth statement fields. Keep them on hand in case FBR later asks you to substantiate a figure via a notice.
