Why Name Availability Matters Before You Do Anything Else
SECP won’t incorporate a company whose name is identical or deceptively similar to an existing registered company, trademark, or a name on their restricted/undesirable list. Checking first avoids wasting an incorporation cycle on a name that gets rejected at the reservation stage.
How to Check Availability Through SECP’s e-Services
- Go to SECP’s official website and access the e-Services portal.
- Use the company name search tool to check if your proposed name (or anything close to it) is already registered.
- Check for close variants too — SECP rejects names that are “deceptively similar,” not just exact duplicates, so a name that differs only by punctuation, spacing, or a generic suffix often still gets rejected.
Rules SECP Applies When Reviewing a Name
- Must not be identical or deceptively similar to an existing company or LLP name.
- Must not violate an existing trademark — a name search alone doesn’t guarantee no trademark conflict; a separate trademark search is worth doing for anything brand-sensitive.
- Cannot imply government/regulatory connection — names suggesting affiliation with a government body, regulator, or international organization without authorization are rejected.
- Restricted words — certain words (bank, insurance, foundation, and similar) require additional regulatory no-objection before SECP will approve them.
- Must include the correct suffix — “(SMC-Private) Limited” for a Single Member Company, “(Private) Limited” for a Private Limited Company, matching your chosen structure.
Reserving the Name Once You’ve Confirmed Availability
Once you’ve checked and settled on a name, submit a name reservation application through e-Services. Approved reservations are typically held for a limited window (SECP specifies the exact period at reservation time) — you need to complete incorporation within that window or the reservation lapses and you’d need to reserve again.
Having Backup Names Ready
Submit 2–3 name options in order of preference where the portal allows it — if your first choice is rejected as too similar to an existing name, having backups ready avoids a full restart of the reservation process.
