When You Need a Revised Return
A Revised Return exists to correct errors, omissions, or incorrect information in a return you already submitted – separate from your original Voluntary Return, which is the first return you file for a tax period. If you spot a mistake after submission – a missed income source, an incorrect figure, a forgotten deduction – you don’t need to contact FBR directly; you can file a revised version yourself through IRIS, subject to the applicable tax laws governing when a revision is allowed.

Step 1: Start the Revision
From your IRIS Dashboard, click the Declaration drop-down menu and select “Return / Statement Revised.” Then click “Normal Return (Ind/AOP/COY).”
Step 2: Select the Tax Period
A pop-up window opens asking for the Tax Period you’re revising. Enter it and click Continue – the revised return interface will load.
Step 3: Make Your Corrections and Resubmit
From here, the process follows the same steps as filing your original return – go through the relevant income modules, correct whatever needs fixing, and submit following the standard return filing procedure (selecting income sources, completing each module, checking your Tax Chargeable/Payments computation, reconciling your Wealth Statement if applicable, and submitting). You’re not starting from scratch – your originally filed data carries over, and you’re editing the parts that were wrong.
Common Mistakes We See With Revised Returns
- Assuming a revision automatically replaces the whole return. Review every section carefully rather than only editing the one field you know was wrong – a downstream figure that depended on it (like your Wealth Statement reconciliation) may also need to be recalculated.
- Not checking whether a revision is still permitted for that tax period. Revisions are subject to applicable tax law timelines – if you’re unsure whether you’re still within the allowed window, it’s worth confirming before starting the process.
- Re-declaring income sources that weren’t actually wrong, which can create inconsistencies with figures that were already correct in the original filing.
FAQ
Can I submit a revised return after filing?
Yes – use the Return / Statement Revised option from the Declaration menu, subject to applicable tax laws governing revision timelines.
What’s the difference between a Voluntary Return and a Revised Return?
A Voluntary Return is your original return filed for a tax period. A Revised Return is filed afterward to correct or update information in that previously submitted return.
Do I need to redo the entire return when filing a revision?
No – your previously filed data carries into the revised return. You correct the specific sections that need fixing and resubmit.
