Reporting Other Sources Income in the New IRIS Return
Not every type of income fits neatly under Employment, Property, Business, or Capital Gains. Dividends, profit on debt, royalties, prizes, winnings, annuities, and anything else that doesn’t belong under another head of income go into the Other Sources section. Select it as an income source on the Return Prerequisites screen if you have income like this.
For the full return walkthrough from login to submission, see our step-by-step guide to filing your income tax return online.
Step 1: Add Your Other Income
Navigate to Other Sources and select Receipts/Deductions. Click “+ Other Income,” select the applicable income source from the list, and click Add – it’ll appear in the grid.
A few categories work differently: Profit on Debt, Dividend Income, and Return on Investment on Sukuks are auto-populated and locked from direct editing. If these figures need to change, don’t try to edit them here – go to the Tax Deduction tab instead and add the relevant section there, which is what actually drives these auto-populated amounts.
For income types you can edit directly, enter the required values, click Calculate, then Next.
Step 2: Tax Deductions
Under Tax Deductions, you’ll typically need to add both Adjustable Tax and Final Tax entries, depending on what kind of Other Sources income you have:
- Click “+ Section” under Adjustable Tax, select the applicable category, and click Add.
- Click “+ Section” under Final Tax, select the applicable category, and click Add.
Enter the required values against each entry, click Calculate, then Next.
Common Mistakes We See With Other Sources Income
- Trying to manually edit Profit on Debt or Dividend Income in the Receipts/Deductions tab. These fields are locked by design – the fix is always on the Tax Deduction tab, not here.
- Missing prize or winning income because it feels like a one-off that doesn’t need reporting – it does, and it belongs specifically under Other Sources.
- Not adding both Adjustable and Final Tax entries when both types of tax actually apply to different pieces of the same Other Sources income.
FAQ
What counts as Other Sources income?
Dividends, profit on debt, royalties, prizes, winnings, annuities, and any other taxable income that doesn’t fall under Employment, Property, Business, or Capital Gains.
Why can’t I edit my dividend income figure directly?
Dividend income, profit on debt, and Sukuk returns are pulled in automatically and locked. To change the amount, add or adjust the relevant section on the Tax Deduction tab instead.
Is prize money from a raffle or competition taxable?
Yes – report it under Other Sources. It’s typically subject to tax at source, so make sure the corresponding Final Tax entry is added on the Tax Deductions tab.
